People & Showbiz 1963 Christine Keeler, central figure in the Profumo affair, was arrested and charged with perjury. 1969 ITV began broadcasting in colour. 1987 'No Sex Please - We're British', the world's longest running comedy, closed after 6,671 performances spanning 16 years. 1997 Princes' William and Harry made their first public appearance after Diana's death before the grieving crowds at Kensington Palace. General Events 1664 After days of negotiation, the Dutch settlement of New Amsterdam, surrendered to the British, who would later rename it New York. 1800 French troops occupying Malta surrendered to the British. 1945 French troops landed in Singapore without any opposition and on September 12th the Allied Commander, Lord Louis Mountabatten accepted the surrender of Singapore, by the Japanese. 1958 Martin Luther King was fined $14 for refusing to obey a police officer. 1993 The Swiss army revealed they were to be issued with a new armed bicycle, built to carry a machine gun, a bazooka and mortar.
