General Events 1852 The first hydrogen filled airship, or 'dirigible', made its maiden flight at Versailles. 1869 The American stock market suffered the financial disaster known as 'Black Friday' after financiers Jay Gould and James Frisk attempted to corner the gold market and prices soured to unprecedented heights. 1960 The USS Enterprise, the first nuclear powered aircraft carrier, was launched at Newport, Virginia. 1988 Camden Council banned 'Whizzer and Chips' comics and Enid Blyton's books for being 'ideologically unsound'. 1994 Fragments of DNA had been isolated from the femur of a 65 million-year old Tyrannosuarus Rex. Dr Richard Thomas at the Natural History Museum said he could not completely rule out the possibility that dinosaurs may one day be brought back to life in a 'Jurassic Park' type scenario. 1996 The US and the world's other major nuclear powers signed a treaty to end all testing and development of nuclear weapons.
