General Events 1399 Richard II abdicated, to be replaced by Henry IV, the first time an English monarch had relinquished the throne. 1938 British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain told a crowd at Heston Airport, London, on his return from Germany:'I believe it is peace in our time'. 1946 An international military tribunal in Nuremburg, Germany found 22 top Nazi leaders guilty of war crimes. 11 were sentenced to death. 1949 The Berlin airlift ended. 1949 Communist leader Mao Tse-Tung was elected chairman of the People's Republic. 1980 Israel issued their new currency.
