Miss Amanda Reiss portrayed the Queen Mother in the sory of the abdication crisis of 1936. 1982 Thomas Keneally was awarded the Booker McConnel prize for fiction for his book 'Schindler's Ark' arousing much controversy over whether the book, as a reconstruction of a true event, sholud have been eligible for the fiction category. General Events 1812 Napoleon began his retreat from Moscow after suffering heavy casualties from Russian soldiers and the harsh Russian winter. 1987 An American naval strike against 2 Iranian oil platforms in the Gulf, in retaliation against an Iranian attack on the US-flagged tanke, provoked a near declaration of war from Tehran. 1989 The environmental group Greenpeace announced they had blocked the main sewers of Brussels to demonstrate against raw sewage being discharged into the Schrldt river. 1991 It was announced that Brixton prison's F Wing, where 14 inmates had committed suicide in the last 2 years, was to close after a report by European Human Rights inspectors. 1992 European Community fisheries ministers agreed to protect dolphins in the Pacific by banning EC vessels from using purse-seine nets in which dolphins as well as fish became trapped.
