People & Showbiz 1883 The Metropolitan Opera House opened in New York. 1931 In Chicago, gangster Al Capone was sentenced to 11 years for tax evasion, the longest sentence ever given for the crime. General Events 1910 Dr Hawley Crippen was convicted and sentenced to hang at the Old Bailey for poisoning his wife Cora. 1962 Nelson Mandela went on trial in South Africa accused of treason. 1964 French philosopher and writer Jean-Paul Sartre rejected the Nobel Prize for Literature, saying it would lessen the impact of his writing. 1966 Soviet spy George Blake escaped from Wormwood Scrubbs prison where he was serving a 40 year sentence. 1997 A new portrait of the Queen reflecting her advancing years was announced to have been approved by the Queen and was set to appear on coins from 1998. 2001 The UK prepared for more rain in what was thought to be the worst flood for 20 years.
