General Events 1604 King James VI of Scotland, became King James I of England, Scotland Ireland and Wales. 1908 Suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst and her daughter Chrstabel were sentenced to jail in London for 'conduct likely to cause a breach of the peace'. 1945 The United Nations was formally established. 1964 Northern Rhodesia became the Republic of Zambia, with Kenneth Kaunda installed as its first President. 1964 Dr Martin Luther King was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his 'leadership in the fight for civil rights and his persistent advocation of non-violent principles'. 1983 Soviet journalist Oleg Bitov who defected while in Italy was granted political asylum in Britain. Bitov was believed to have links with the KGB. 1995 A total eclipse of the sun was visible from India and Vietnam. 2003 Concorde made its last commercial flight, bringing the era of airliner supersonic travel to a close.
