General Events 1881 The gunfight at the OK Corral took place in Tombstone, Arizona. 1912 The Woolwich Tunnel under the Thames was opened. 1918 While the Great War approached the end in Europe, a flu epidemic claimed 2,225 lives in 1 week. 1951 Winston Churchill became Prime Minister of Great Britain 1980 60,000 protestors thronged the streets in London in Britain's biggest anti-nuclear demonstration for 20 years. 1989 Chancellor of the Exchequer Nigel Lawson resigned over a rift with Prime Minister Thatcher's Alan Walters, to be replaced by John Major. 1992 90 of the 140 staff at Windsor Safari Parkwere made redundant after it closed because of financial difficulties. The remaining staff would continue to look after the animals while the receivers tried to sell the park.
