General Events 1936 Wallis Simpson obtained a divorce from her husband, making her free to marry Edward VIII. 1969 It was announced that all wildlife in a 3000 acre area around Camberley, Surrey was to be destroyed as a precautionary measure, following an attack on 2 people by a rabid dog. 1978 It was announced that Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin, would receive the Nobel Peace Prize for their efforts in establishing peaceful relations between their countries. 1986 The City of London experienced 'Big Bang' day, due to the deregulation of the money market. 1987 27 year old Gilbert McNamee, the Provisional IRA's most sophisticated bomb-maker was sentenced to 25 years' imprisonment. 1997 Wall Street suffered the biggest one day points drop on record that prompted the first emergency shutdown of the New York market under rules drawn up after the 1987 crash.
