General Events 1636 Harvard University, America's oldest was founded at Cambridge, Massachusetts. 1940 During WWII, Italy invaded Greece. 1959 Britain's first car phones were introduced by the GPO via the Manchester Peterloo exchange to 25 subscribers at a cost of £200 for the phone, a quartely licence of £7 10s and a 3 minute call charge of 2s.6d. 1982 Felipe Gonzalez became Spain's first socialist Prime Minister, with a sweeping electoral victory. 1988 2 runaway trains crashed through buffers and fell onto London's North Circular Road during the night causing traffic chaos. British Rail investigated whether vandals had let off the brakes of the diesels.
