General Events 1841 The first edition of Britain's Jewish newspaper 'The Jewish Chronicle' was published. 1867 The Conservatives held Britain's first Party Conference at the Freemason's Tavern on Great Queen Strret, London. 1919 Brothers Keith and Ross Smith departed from Hounslow on the first aeroplane flight to Australia, reaching Darwin on 13th December. 1982 Yuri Andropov succeeded Brezhnev as Soviet leader. 1983 Britain returned a fragment of the Sphinx's beard to Egypt. The fragment had been in the British museum for 165 years. 1990 The coronation of Emperor Akihito of Japan took place in Tokyo. 2001 American Airlines flight 587 crashed just minutes after take off from Kennedy Airport in New York. All 260 people on board were killed.
