People & Showbiz 1859 The world's first flying trapeze circus act was performed by 21 year old Jules Leotard at the Cirque Napoleon in Paris. 1974 A warrant was issued for the arrest of Lord Lucan on charges of murdering his child's nanny and the attempted murder of his wife. 1992 The first episode of 'Absolutely Fabulous' starring Jennifer Saunders and Dawn French was broadcast on the BBC. 1997 The Brazilian Supreme Court unanimously turned down Britain's request to extradite Great Train Robber Ronnie Biggs to Engand to serve the rest of his 30 year prison sentence. General Events 1841 The first edition of Britain's Jewish newspaper 'The Jewish Chronicle' was published. 1867 The Conservatives held Britain's first Party Conference at the Freemason's Tavern on Great Queen Strret, London. 1919 Brothers Keith and Ross Smith departed from Hounslow on the first aeroplane flight to Australia, reaching Darwin on 13th December. 1982 Yuri Andropov succeeded Brezhnev as Soviet leader. 1983 Britain returned a fragment of the Sphinx's beard to Egypt. The fragment had been in the British museum for 165 years. 1990 The coronation of Emperor Akihito of Japan took place in Tokyo. 2001 American Airlines flight 587 crashed just minutes after take off from Kennedy Airport in New York. All 260 people on board were killed.
