People & Showbiz 1939 'Gone With The Wind', starring Clark Gable, Vivien Leigh, and Olivia De Havilland, received its world premiere in New York. 1953 Hugh Heffner's 'Playboy' magazine was published for the first time, with Marilyn Monroe as its first centre-spread nude. General Events 1655 Diarist Samuel Pepys married Elizabeth St. Michel at St. Margaret's Westminster. 1899 The British Army made the first recorded use of radio equipment in battle during the South African War. 1919 Viscountess Astor, Member of Parliament for the Sutton division of Plymouth, became the first woman to take her seat in the House of Commons. 1928 Britain's first pop-up toaster went on sale for 3 guineas. 1967 Tony O'Connor became the first black headmaster in Britain, in Worcestershire |
