1689 The coronation of William III and Mary II as joint sovereigns took place with the Archbishop of Canterbury refusing to officiate at the service.

1855 London's first pillar boxes were installed and painted green.

1930 The Daily Express became the first newspaper to publish listings of television programmes.

1961 The trial of Nazi war criminal Adolf Eichmann opened in Jerusalem. He was found guilty on 15th December of the same year and later hanged.

1968 The Civil Rights Bill was signed by President Lyndon Baines Johnson, making it illegal to refuse housing on the grounds of race.

1984 The Queen Victoria Medical Centre in Melbourne announced the birth of the first baby to be born from a frozen embryo. The baby was a 5lb 13 oz girl named Zoe.

1984 Australia's Federal Cabinet announced that 'Advance Australia Fair' would be the country's new national anthem, after two sexist lines were removed. 'God Save The Queen' would be used only for regal occasions.

1990 Constantine Mitsotakis was sworn in as Prime Minister of Greece.

1991 Civil servants turned down an appeal for a Government subsidy to save London Zoo from closure.

1995 The total number of recorded crimes in England and Wales fell by 5% in 1994 to 5,251,100. But offenses of violence against the person rose by 7%- the biggest annual increase for 5 years.
