General Events 1471 In England, the Yorkists under Edward IV defeat the Lancastrians under Warwick at the battle of Barnet; the Earl of Warwick is killed and Edward IV resumes the throne. 1831 Soldiers marching on a bridge in Manchester, England cause it to collapse. 1927 The first Volvo car premieres in Gothenburg, Sweden. 1954 In Australia, Soviet diplomat Vladimir Petrov defected to the west. His defection exposed a major spy ring in the country and began suspicions that Burgess and Maclean were spying for the Russians. 1981 Columbia, the first American space shuttle, landed at Edwards Air force Base in California after its successful maiden flight. 1983 The President of the Imperial Cancer Reaearch Fund claimed that the number of people surviving cancer had more than doubled since the Second World War. 1988 Statistics released by the Department of Transport claimed that Britain had the safest roads in the European Community, with road deaths at their lowest level for 30 years. 1995 Dr. Jane Goodall was awarded the National Geographic Society's Hubbard Medal- their most highly regarded award- for her study of chimpanzees in east Africa. 1997 A 15 month old bulldog called Fritz was the star of Labour's latest attempt to steal patriotic high-ground from the Conservatives in the run-up to the May general Election. |
