General Events 1916 The British declared martial law throughout Ireland. 1955 28 eight year old former model Ruth Ellis was sent for trial at the Old Bailey, accused of killing her lover David Blakely. Blakely was shot twice in the back outside a pub in Hampstead, North London, on Easter Sunday. 1974 The last Americans were evacuated from Saigon. 1995 A bill which passed its third reading in the House of Commons would put new drivers on probation for 2 years after passing their test. Drivers who get 6 or more penalty points during that period will have their license downgraded to provisional and will be forced to take a new test. 1997 With the General Election only 3 days away and Labour leading in the polls, Tony Blair announced that, should he win, he would be moving into No. 10 Downing Street but there would be some restucturing of the building to make it suitable for a family. |
