General Events 1376 Sir Peter de la Mare took office as the first Speaker of the House of Commons. 1661 Ming Dynasty loyalist Cheng Cheng Kung landed in Taiwan and ousted the Dutch colonists who had occupied the country for 37 years. The day is now remembered with festivals, especially in the Tainan, South Taiwan where the Dutch had their headquarters. 1913 The modern-day zipper was patented by Swedish born engineer Gideon Sundback from New Jersey, USA. 1935 The first cats eyes were laid in British roads. They had been invented by Percy Shaw of Yorkshire a year earlier. 1985 American Space Shuttle Challenger took off from Kennedy Space Centre for 111 orbits of the earth with its crew of 7 and rats & dogs. The shuttle landed safely at Edwards Air Force Base on May 6th. 1990 British Satellite Broadcasting launched its satellite television service. 1991 South East Bangladesh was struck by a cyclone killing around 140,000 people. 1995 It was reported that MI5's secret telephone number, used by agents to contact their controllers, had been published on the Internet. |
