The reel was worth $60,000 by itself, but was priceless to anyone able to convert it to video. General Events 334 BC The Greek army of Alexander the Great defeats Darius III of Persia in the Battle of the Granicus. 1377 Pope Gregory XI issues five papal bulls to denounce the doctrines of English theologian John Wycliffe. 1897 The Blackwall Tunnel under the River Thames was officially opened 1908 The airplane was patented by the Wright brothers. 1989 The Countryside Commission revealed plans for a 30 square mile forest to the east of London as part of a national scheme to increase woodland on the outskirts of large towns and cities. 1990 It was reported that Australians are 8 times more vulnerable to alcohol-related brain damage than drinkers in other Western countries. The Australian Minister for the Aged, Family and Health Services asked all Australians to face up to the 'widespread and alarming' incidence of brain damage. 1992 A 31 year old sex attacker from Ealing was released by the Old Bailey on the condition that he accept lifelong chemical castration. 1997 The government promised free nursery places to every 4 year old from September 1998. The announcement came after an outcry over the £1100 voucher scheme for nursery places. Education secretary David Blunkett also announced that the £674 million already collected from the scheme would go directly to local authorities. |
