General Events 1903 Henry Ford formed his motor manufacturing company with himself in the position of Chief Engineer and holding a quarter of the company shares. 1903 A one-year old soft drinks company registered its trade name as Pepsi- Cola. 1948 Cathay Pacific's flying boat Miss Macao became the first airplane to be hijacked, by a gang of Chinese bandits on a scheduled flight to Hong Kong. The captain refused to take their orders and following gunfire, the plane crashed, killing all but the leader of the bandits. 1958 Yellow 'No Waiting' lines were introduced in Britain. 1993 An inquest was told that football fan David Bruce died after he drank a pint of whisky in only 20 seconds for a dare. 1997 The new single currency Euro coins were unveiled by the European Commission. The Queen's head survived on the front of the coins that would be minted and circulated in Britain, if we sign up, and the reverse shows a map of Europe with Britain in the centre. The coins were hoped to be in circulation by 2002. |
