1988 FIFA banned Mexico from all international football competitions for 2 years for including 4 over-age players during a youth tournament.

1992 French player Guy Forget was fined £277 for 'racket abuse' after slamming it into his kitbag during his hard-fought win over Britain's Jeremy Bates.

1995 Temperatures soared to 110F on the Centre Court at Wimbledon, 4F hotter than the previous high recorded in 1976.

2002 The Brazilian national football team won the 2002 FIFA World Cup after Germany 2-0 in the final on International Stadium Yokohama.

1859 Charles Blondin became the first person to tightrope walk across Niagara Falls. It took him 8 minutes cross the 1,110 ft rope, suspended 160ft above the falls, watched by an audience of over 20,000 people. On the return journey he stopped halfway to take photographs of the crowd, many of whom fainted.

1985 Yul Brynner gave his final Broadway performance as the King of Siamin the hit musical 'The King And I'. He had played the role for 34 years, racking up over 4500 performances.

1992 Former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher joins the House of Lords as Baroness Thatcher of Kesteven.
