1896 The first purpose-built permanent cinema was opened on the corner of Canal Street and Exchange Place in New Orleans, USA. The 400-seater had an admission charge of 10 cents with a further charge of 10 cents if the customer wanted to enter the projection room to see the Edison Vitascope Projector.
