1988 Briton Brian Milton completed his record- breaking microlight flight from London to Darwin in 36 days, beating the only other attempt, by compatriot Eve Jackson, of 15 months.

1976 Two Concordes took off simultaneously from London and Paris destined for Bahrain and Rio de Janeiro on the aircraft's first commercial flights.

1983 It was announced that Hever Castle, home of the Astor family for 80 years, had been sold for around £9m to the Scarborough based Broadland Properties.

1993 Special branch detectives Richard Allen and John Hague won undisclosed libel damages over allegations in a book claiming that they were removed from the Lockerbie enquiry team for being 'idle and arrogant'.
