General Events

1986 The US space shuttle Challenger exploded shortly after take-off from Cape Canaveral, killing the 5 men and 2 women on board, including schoolteacher Christa McAuliffe, the first private citizen ever selected to fly into space.

1990 As part of American defence cuts, the Pentagon was expected to announce the US would pull out of 3 British bases. The 3 bases were expected to be Fairford in Gloucestershire, Wethersfield in Essex and Greenham Common in Berkshire.

1993 British Rail was handed a £5000 bill after a dozy porter put a passenger on the wrong train. She was travelling towards Edinburgh from Newcastle instead of London. The company halted the train wile she got off and delayed another until she arrived, upgraded her to 1st class, gave her a free meal, phoned her mum and paid for the taxi home.
