1988 The Nottingham Forest board refused manager Brian Clough permission to become the part-time manager of the Welsh national team.

1990 During a world championship fight in Tokyo, James 'Buster' Douglas picked himself up after being floored by reigning world heavyweight champion Mike Tyson in the eighth round, to knock Tyson out two rounds later in one of boxing history's most surprising results.

1992 Mike Tyson was found guilty of the rape of 18-year old beauty queen Desiree Washington.

1990 ANC leader Nelson Mandela was released from prison after his 27-year prisonment.

1994 Singer Luciano Pavarotti announced the cancellation of his concert at Sheffield Arena after sales of the 12,000 seats were disappointing.

1975 At the age of 49, Margaret Thatcher became the first woman leader of a British political party, beating William Whitelaw 146 votes to 79 in a poll for Tory leadership.

1991 British Rail set itself a target of a nil accident rate on the national rail network according to a railway safety plan.

1993 Deny Harris gave birth to a 4lb 7oz baby girl which had developed outside her womb at Birmingham Maternity Hospital. Doctors claimed the chances of the baby surviving had been one in 100,000.

1995 Railtrack was preparing to offer voluntary redundancy to up to 15% of its 12,000 staff.
