While waiting for DNA tests to prove the child's lineage, the topless model announced she wanted £5million from Jagger to raise her son. General Events 1152 Henry II of England marries Eleanor of Aquitaine. 1830 The concept of the lawnmower was invented by Edwin Budding of Stroud who instructed a local iron worker to build 'machinery for the purpose of cropping or shearing the vegetable surface of lawns' in a contract signed today. 1955 The first Wimpy Bar opened in London, beginning the fast-food invasion. 1901 Alexandra Palace was opened to the public. 1964 Mods and Rockers clashed at seaside resorts throughout the UK. In Brighton 600 Mods were dispersed by police with 76 arrests: in Margate 2 youths were stabbed and 51 arrested. 1990 Penguin books were set to scrap publication of Salman Rushdie's 'The Satanic Verses' in paperback as security costs had risen to £2 million a year against outraged Muslims. 1991 27 year old Helen Sharman became the first Briton in space after taking off with 2 Soviet cosmonauts in the TM-12 rocket. 1997 It was announced that MI5 were to open their phone-lines to the public, advertise for staff and release documents from their archives to historians for the first time. 1998 United States v. Microsoft: The United States Department of Justice and 20 U.S. states file an antitrust case against Microsoft. |
