1923 The first 24 hour Le Mans race took place, won by French drivers Lagache and Leonard.

1975 American stuntman Evel Knievel suffered serious spinal injuries when his bike crashed during an attempt to jump 13 buses in England.

1999 Manchester United secured the treble of the Premiership, FA Cup and European Cup after a spectacular 2-1 victory over Bayern Munich in the final of the latter in Barcelona. United scored their 2 goals in stoppage time after being 1-0 down from 6 minutes into the game.

1990 Britain and France were competing to provide the site for a movie theme park which would create over 20,000 jobs.

1991 27 year old Helen Sharman, Britain's first woman astronaut, returned to earth after a successful 8 day mission.

1868 The last public execution took place in England, outside Newgate Prison in London, when Irish national Michael Barratt was hanged.

1994 A house at 8 Hyde Park Gardens, London on the market for £10 million was reduced in price to £5 million after being on the market for a year. This is believed to be the biggest recorded price cut for a London house.

1997 Britain basked in the warmest Spring Bank Holiday weekend for 5 years as temperatures reached 21C (70F)

2003 Only three days after a previous record, Sherpa Lakpa Gelu climbs Mount Everest in 10 hours 56 minutes. The tourism ministry of Nepal confirms this record in July that year.
