1837 The Registration of Births, Marriages and Deaths came into effect in England and Wales, after the Act was passed on 17th August 1836. The first entry in the Birth Register was Mary Ann Aaron of Drewsbury, Yorkshire.

1858 The joint reading of Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace's papers on evolution to the Linnean Society.

1937 The 999 emergency telephone service came into operation in Britain, the first of its kind in the world.
1948 The New York International Airport, now known as John F. Kennedy Airport was officially opened.

1963 Kim Philby was named by the govenment as the 'Third Man' in the Burgess and Maclean spy ring.

1971 34 years after it was completed, the Golden Gate Bridge near San Francisco was paid for by tolls paid by motorists, though a toll is still charged today.

1994 PLO leader Yasir Arafat returned to Jerusalem for the first time in 33 years. Israel's hold on the City had prevented him being able to visit as he was a sworn ememy of the State of Israel and viewed as a terrorist.

1994 Of the £210 million maintenance collected by the Child Support Agency in its first year, only £3 million actually went to the families, according to the Labour Party.

1999 The Scottish Parliament is officially opened by Queen Elizabeth on the day powers are officially transferred from the old Scottish Office in London to the new devolved Scottish Executive in Edinburgh.

2007 Smoking in England is banned in all public indoor spaces. With the ban already in force in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, this means it is illegal to smoke in indoor public places anywhere in the UK. The ban is also put into effect in Australia.
