1987 Ilona Staller, a former porn star, was elected to the Italian parliament.

1996 'Independence Day', starring Wil Smith and Jeff Goldblum was released in American cinemas. It grossed a record $96.4 million in the first weekend.

1997 'Men in Black' starring Wil Smith and Tommy Lee Jones opened in American cinemas. It grossed $51 million in its first weekend.

General Events

1901 Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid robbed a heavily armed banker's train in Montana and escaped worth $40,000.

1989 The British Library announced that it was to end its 300 year tradition of collecting every book published in this country in an attempt to cut down on the large number of new books and journals it has to store each year.

1993 The Popular Flying Association was to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Captain W.E. Johns, the creator of Biggles by inviting light aircraft of every shape and size to Wroughton airfield, near Swindon, Wiltshire, for the largest fly-in outside America.

1994 It was reported that the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh were unaware that Prince Charles had confessed to adultery in his television interview and were not told in advance that he would publicly discuss his friendship with Camilla Parker Bowles.

1995 The Archbishop of Canterbury's son, Mark Carey was ordained as a priest at a ceremony at Wakefield Cathedral.

1995 British conservationists and the Chinese Government launched an ambitious attempt to save the last giant pandas from poachers, land clearance and in-breeding. Only 1000 giant pandas were left in the wild.
