General Events 1223 Louis VIII becomes King of France upon the death of his father, Philip II of France. 1789 French Revolution: Citizens of Paris storm the Bastille and free seven prisoners. 1867 Dynamite was demonstrated for the first time by Alfred Noble, at a quarry in Redhill, Surrey. 1881 Billy the Kid is shot and killed by Pat Garrett outside Fort Sumner. 1965 The American space probe Mariner Four flew by Mars, sending back photographs of the planet. The pictures revealed rock formations on the surface that resembled a human face. 1984 Alan Young from Southwark, South London was jailed for 2 1/2 years after he admitted charges of blackmail and burglary. The Central Criminal Court was told that his shame of finding out that he was the illegitimate son of spy Kim Philby was to blame of his life of crime. 1989 Over a million spectactors gathered in the centre of Paris to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the French Revolution with a huge parade of musicians, jugglers and dancers along the Champs Elysees. 1995 8 men were sentenced at Snaresbrook Crown Court for reprogramming mobile phones to make free calls to premium lines that had set up in Pakistan, costing BT up to £25,000 a day. In three weeks £600,000 worth of calls were made to one number alone. 1997 The Government announced that the age of consent for gay sex would be lowered to 16.
