People & Showbiz 1940 The animated short A Wild Hare is released, introducing the character of Bugs Bunny. 1981 British television: On Coronation Street, Ken Barlow marries Deirdre Langton, which proves to be a national event, with massive viewer numbers earned for the show. 1985 'Amadeus' received four Golden Globe awards from Hollywood's Foreign Press Association. 1992 Monty Python star Michael Palin was to be honoured by the City of Sheffield, where he made his stage debut, with an honorary degree presented to him by Sheffield University. General Events 1663 The British Parliament passes the second Navigation Act requiring that all goods bound for the American colonies have to be sent in English ships from English ports. 1694 A Royal Charter is granted to the Bank of England. 1926 Scottish inventor John Logie Baird gave the first public demonstration of television, to members of the Royal Institution, at his Soho workshop. 1981 Rupert Murdoch's bid to buy 'The Times' and 'Sunday Times' was given the go ahead without the investigation usually required by the Monopolies Commission. 1992 Democratic Presidential candidate Bill Clinton was accused of being a liar by part-time cabaret singer Gennifer Flowers, following his denial of an alleged 12 year affair with her. |
