People & Showbiz 1974 A one-off episodeof 'Rising Damp' was broadcast called 'The Lodgers'. It proved so popular ,a new series began in December. 1990 Iraqi newspapers stated that Mrs Thatcher was a 'circus buffoon, vomiting poison like a spotted serpent'. General Events 1666 The Great Fire of London began in a bakery in Pudding Lane. The fire destroyed 13,000 buildings in 4 days, only 8 people died in the fire. 1789 The 3rd American presidential cabinet department, The Treasury Department, was established by an act of congress. 1944 Jewish diarist Anne Frank was sent to Auschwitz. 1944 Navy pilot and future president George Bush was shot down by the Japanese after a successful bombing run against an enemy radio communications centre in the Bonin islands. He was rescued by the US marine Finback. 1979 The Yorkshire Ripper murdered his 12th victim, 20 year old Bradford University student Barbara Leach. 1997 It was announced that the 6 photographers and motorcycle courier involved in the chase that culminated in the death of Diana, Princess of Wales were to face manslaughter charges after they failed to help the crah victims. |
