General Events 1216 King John of England dies at Newark-on-Trent and is succeeded by his nine-year-old son Henry. 1812 Napoleon began his retreat from Moscow after suffering heavy casualties from Russian soldiers and the harsh Russian winter. 1987 An American naval strike against 2 Iranian oil platforms in the Gulf, in retaliation against an Iranian attack on the US-flagged tanke, provoked a near declaration of war from Tehran. 1987 (Black Monday) Dow Jones Industrial Average falls by 22%, 508 points. 1989 The environmental group Greenpeace announced they had blocked the main sewers of Brussels to demonstrate against raw sewage being discharged into the Schrldt river. 1991 It was announced that Brixton prison's F Wing, where 14 inmates had committed suicide in the last 2 years, was to close after a report by European Human Rights inspectors. 1992 European Community fisheries ministers agreed to protect dolphins in the Pacific by banning EC vessels from using purse-seine nets in which dolphins as well as fish became trapped. 2003 Mother Teresa is beatified by Pope John Paul II. |
