Schumacher went off and Villeneuve made it to the finish line. People & Showbiz 1950 The first sound and vision broadcast from the Houseof Commons was broadcast, showing George VI reopening the chamber after repair work carried out on damage sustained during the war. 1965 The Queen awarded the Beatles their MBE medals at Buckingham Palace. 1989 The Globe Theatre opened for the first time in 350 years. General Events 740 An earthquake strikes Constantinople, causing much damage and many deaths. 1775 King George III goes before Parliament to declare the American colonies in rebellion, and authorized a military response to quell the American Revolution. 1881 The gunfight at the OK Corral took place in Tombstone, Arizona. 1912 The Woolwich Tunnel under the Thames was opened. 1918 While the Great War approached the end in Europe, a flu epidemic claimed 2,225 lives in 1 week. 1951 Winston Churchill became Prime Minister of Great Britain 1980 60,000 protestors thronged the streets in London in Britain's biggest anti-nuclear demonstration for 20 years. 1989 Chancellor of the Exchequer Nigel Lawson resigned over a rift with Prime Minister Thatcher's Alan Walters, to be replaced by John Major. 1992 90 of the 140 staff at Windsor Safari Parkwere made redundant after it closed because of financial difficulties. The remaining staff would continue to look after the animals while the receivers tried to sell the park. 1999 Britain's House of Lords votes to end the right of hereditary peers to vote in Britain's upper chamber of Parliament. |
